Noted American artist Howard Simon was born in New York City in 1902. Simon would become well known as a painter, sculptor, engraver, portraitist, and illustrator, while serving on the art faculty of New York University for 24 years. He died in 1979 in White Plains, New York at the age of 77. Simon spent several years in Arkansas during the depression with his wife Charley May Hogue Simon [1897-1977], who was also an artist and well know children’s’ book author. This drawing was made while the Simons were living in an isolated log cabin near Cove Valley, in rural Pope County, Arkansas. The drawing is dated “Aug 22, 1933” in the lower left corner.
